What is VPN?

 

VPN is as virtual personal network. VPN technology allows for hooking up remote users to a local network with protected channels of communication through a generally accessible network (i.e. Internet).

 

Remote users are:

• employees working in a company with a branched out infrastructure. That is, those companies that have several offices, warehouses and stores located in different districts of the city or in other cities of Ukraine or other countries;
• employees whose work involves traveling during which they require access to their company’s local network.

VPN technology allows for organizing the security of data transferred through generally accessible networks through deciphering.

 

What is needed to organize VPN?

• an access channel for the central office of each department of the company or each user. This can be a dedicated line or a switchboard line;
• equipping of the access hub in the central office (VPN-server) and equipping of each department or user (VPN-client). Either specialized equipment or a standard router can be used as a VPN-server. A standard router can server as a VPN-client for the company department. It has sufficient software for its operating system.

How does this work? Let’s assume that the central office, departments and users already have an Internet connection.

 

In the central office a router is installed and a VPN-server is installed on its basis. A VPN-client is installed on routers in company departments and on computers of separate users (as a rule, operating systems are already in place).

 

VPN-client sets up communication with the VPN-server and transfers to it a login and a password for authentication. If it successfully passes through then the network configuration are provided to the customer and they gain access to the network in accordance to their rights.
